Kisspeptin, encoded by the KISS1 gene, is an important peptide hormone involved in human reproduction. It stimulates gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), regulating the release of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, both of which are necessary for sexual maturation and function [1].
Kisspeptin functions via its receptor, GPR54, and has been discovered to have critical roles in the neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction. Deficiencies or mutations in Kisspeptin or GPR54 can result in pubertal failure and infertility, emphasising the relevance of these proteins in reproductive health [2].
Kisspeptin neurons also show different patterns of activity that are synchronised with the circadian rhythm, implying that they play a role in the timing of the preovulatory LH surge. This suggests that Kisspeptin pre mixed peptide may contribute to the LH surge by activating GnRH neurons [3].
